Taxonomy
Elotherium superbus was named by Leidy (1868). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Douglas Flat, which is in a Whitneyan terrestrial horizon in California.

It was corrected as Elotherium superbum by Leidy (1868), Leidy (1873), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Archaeotherium superbum by Wood (1960); it was considered a nomen vanum by Peterson (1909); it was considered a nomen dubium by Troxell (1920), Foss and Fremd (1998).
