Tulungospirifer was named by Jin and Sun (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 538].

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spiriferellinidae by Williams et al. (2006).
