Asaphus (Isotelus) gigas was named by Dekay (1824). It is the type species of Isotelus.

It was recombined as Asaphus gigas by Nicholson and Etheridge (1880); it was recombined as Isotelus gigas by Bigsby (1868) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
