Asaphus seticornis was named by Hisinger (1840). It is the type species of Tretaspis.

It was recombined as Trinucleus seticornis by Törnquist (1883); it was recombined as Tretaspis seticornis by Hisinger (1840), M'Coy (1849), Owen (1980).
