Mustela diluviana was named by Cope (1889).

It was recombined as Martes diluviana by Hall (1926), Gidley and Gazin (1933), Hall (1936) and Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Pekania diluviana by Samuels and Cavin (2013).
