Entomostracites expansus was named by Wahlenberg (1821). It is the type species of Asaphus.
It was recombined as Asaphus (Asaphus) expansus by Hansen and Nielsen (2003); it was recombined as Asaphus expansus by Brongniart (1822), Dalman (1827), Nielsen (1995), Jell and Adrain (2002) and Ivantsov (2003).
