Nothofagus cethanica was named by Hill (1984) [Type locality: Cethana, Tasmania.]. Its type specimen is Holotype: Specimen UTGD122126, housed in the Geology Department, University of Tasmania., a leaf, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Cethana Dam, which is in an Oligocene lagoonal siltstone/sandstone in Australia.

R. S. Hill 1984 | Leaf usually symmetrical at base, ovate. Leaf length 3.2-6.0 cm, width 2.4-3.5 cm. Leaf apex acute, base obtuse. Leaf margin irregularly serrate. Serration sinus rounded or acute, basal side convex, apical side straight or concave. Subsidiary serrations common, approximately 3 serrations per secondary vein. Venation simple craspedodromous, with 9-12 alternate secondary veins arising at 40-80 ° from the primary vein. Intersecondary veins absent. Tertiary veins weakly percurrent. Secondary veins and major branches run straight into serrations. Fimbrial vein present. Base of serration sinus with a well developed vein plexus composed of two or more tertiary veins and the fimbrial vein. |
