Tramea was named by Hagen (1861). It is extant. It is the type genus of Trameini, Trameinae.
It was assigned to Pantaliinae by Gentilini (1989); and to Trameini by Nel and Paicheler (1993), International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (2006).
