Oligobiotherium was named by Ameghino (1902). Its type is Oligobiotherium divisus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Microbiotherium by Marshall (1982).

It was assigned to Microbiotheriidae by Ameghino (1902) and Goin and Abello (2013).
