Melolontha was named by Fabricius (1775). It is extant. It is the type genus of Melolonthidae, Melolonthini.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775); to Coleoptera by Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Scarabaeides by Latreille (1802); to Melolonthinae by Krell (2000); to Scarabaeidae by Green et al. (2006); to Melolonthina by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Melolonthini by Statz (1952), Allsopp and Schoolmeesters (2024).
