Conotelus was named by Erichson (1843). It is extant. It is the type genus of Conotelini.

It was assigned to Carpophilinae by Erichson (1843); to Cillaeinae by Kirejtshuk (2008); to Nitidulidae by Elias (2014); and to Conotelini by Kirejtshuk and Kovalev (2022).
