Rhizophagus was named by Herbst (1793) [Original spelling Ryzophagus was placed on the Official Index of Rejected and Suppressed Generic Names in Zoology, Rhizophagus was considered the correct original spelling of the genus and placed on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology.]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Rhizophaginae.
