M. I. A. Ibrahim 2002 | Retimonocolpites ghazalii sp. nov. is distinguished among other species of the genus Retimonocolpites by its larger size and elliptical to oval shape. It differs from R. matruhensis Penny (1986, Upper Barremian of the Western Desert, Egypt) by its highly
segmented muri and larger size. Penny (1986) recorded the size range of R. matruhensis as 31.3 (37.2) 45.8 μm in length and 20.0 (23.0) 25.2 μm in width; Schrank and Mahmoud (2002) extended the maximum diameter of this species to be 43 (51) 67 μm. Retimonocolpites ghazalii sp. nov. shows a remarkable similarity under the light microscope with Retimonocolpites variplicatus Schrank and Mahmoud (1998, p. 187–188, figs. 7u and 8a–e, j–k,m) from the Barremian to Cenomanian of Mut-2 well, Dakhla Oasis, Western Desert, central Egypt. SEM observation reveals that the latter species can be differentiated from R. ghazalii sp. nov. by its relatively larger size (length: 62–100 μm; width: 34–66 μm), smooth non-segmented muri, larger lumina (1–4 μm in diameter), as well as by its colpus, which has a characteristic smooth margo, i.e. lumina of the reticulum decrease in size towards the colpus margin and disappear completely at the margin. |
