M. I. A. Ibrahim 2002 | Small to medium sized, monocolpate pollen, ellipsoidal to elongate tapered, with pointed ends. Colpus long, from pole to pole, usually tightly closed throughout its entire length. Exine tectate–perforate, moderately thick (about 1 μm). Sexine finely foveolate or scorbiculate, foveolae generally less than 0.5 μm in diameter and densely spaced, giving a microreticulate appearance. Nexine thin, closely attached to sexine with minute columellae.
Arecipites microfoveolatus sp. nov. is distinguished by its ellipsoidal outline, blunt-ending to tapering at the poles. Arecipites pereensis (Juhász and Góczán, 1985) comb. nov., differs by its larger size (length 77 μm, width 29 μm) and a slightly rounded contour at at least one pole. Retimonocolpite matruhensis Penny (1986) is similar in shape and size to A. microfoveolatus sp. nov., but differs by its semitectate reticulate exine, colpus open at poles to gaping, and its length/width ratio being less than 2.0, i.e. wider than A. microfoveolatus. |
