Ablator lanatus was named by Petrunkevitch (1958). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber, Zoological Museum, Humboldt Univ Berlin (ZHMB MfN) Collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in the Russian Federation.
It was recombined as Cryptoplanus lanatus by Wunderlich (2004).
