Polypodiisporites echinatus was named by Jaramillo and Dilcher (2001) [Type locality: Piñalerita Creek near Sabanalarga. PaleoDB number 28439. Dimensions in polar view. ]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is UFP 11, 15.5 x 108.5, a microspore.
