Agapythinae was named by Sen Gupta and Crowson (1969). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Agapythidae by Robertson et al. (2015), Cai et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Phloeostichidae by Lawrence and Newton (1995); and to Cucujoidea by Robertson et al. (2015), Cai et al. (2022).
