Phlebotomus vetus was named by Stebner et al. (2015). Its type specimen is SMF Be 2533, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Burmese amber (SMF coll), which is in a Cenomanian terrestrial amber in Myanmar.
