Taxonomy
Staphylinus punctulatus was named by Paykull (1789). It is extant.

It was replaced with Gyrohypnus liebei by Herman (2001); it was recombined as Gyrophynus punctulatus by Green et al. (2006); it was recombined as Gyrohypnus punctulatus by International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (2007).
