Taxonomy
Helophorida was named by Leach (1815). It is extant.

It was reranked as the tribe Helophorina by Sahlberg (1880); it was reranked as the subfamily Helophorinae by Lawrence and Newton (1995) and Bouchard et al. (2011); it was corrected as Helophoridae by Short and Fikáček (2013) and Cai et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Hydrophilidae by Sahlberg (1880), Lawrence and Newton (1995) and Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Hydrophiloidea by Short and Fikáček (2013) and Cai et al. (2022).
