Taxonomy
Sigmogomphius lecontei was named by Merriam (1896) [genotype]. Its type locality is UCMP 1082a, Bald Peak Site 1, which is in a Miocene terrestrial siliciclastic in the Siesta Formation of California.
It was recombined as Eucastor lecontei by Kellogg (1910), Stirton (1935), Stirton (1939); it was recombined as Dipoides lecontei by Matthew (1913); it was recombined as Prodipoides lecontei by Korth (2007).
