Pliauchenia (Megatylopus) was named by Matthew and Cook (1909). Its type is Pliauchenia (Megatylopus) gigas.
It was synonymized subjectively with Paracamelus by Macdonald (1959); it was reranked as Megatylopus by Matthew (1924), Simpson (1945), Webb (1965), Patton (1969), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Harrison (1985), Voorhies and Corner (1986), Carroll (1988), Honey et al. (1998) and Lynch et al. (2020).
It was assigned to Pliauchenia by Matthew and Cook (1909) and Sinclair (1915); to Camelinae by Simpson (1945); to Camelopini by Webb (1965); to Camelidae by Matthew (1924), Patton (1969), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Harrison (1985) and Carroll (1988); and to Camelini by Voorhies and Corner (1986), Honey et al.
