Taxonomy
Cervavitus cauvieri was named by de Christol (1832). Its type specimen is UM055, Fac. des Sciences de Montpellier (antler) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Montpellier, which is in a Zanclean marine sandstone in the Sables à Gryphaea virleti Formation of France.
