Caulophilus ayotzinapa was named by Barrios-Izás (2016). Its type specimen is e Rafael Landívar University Collection TOT 052.3, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Rio Totolapa Salado amber (Coty collection, MNHN), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
