Stephanastrum was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-l R]. It is not extant. Its type is Stephanastrum rhombus.

It was assigned to Histriastrinae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
