Wodnika was named by Münster (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2,451].

It was assigned to Cestraciontidae by Woodward (1889); to Heterodontidae by Jordan and Gilbert (1919), Jordan (1963); to Ctenacanthoidea by Zangerl (1981); and to Ctenacanthida by Sepkoski (2002).
