Taxonomy

Entelodon was named by Aymard (1846) [type European E. magnum, not the same as Elotherium magnum; see Effinger 1998 Type species: E. magnus and not magnum ]. Its type is Entelodon magnus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Elotherium by Leidy (1873).

It was assigned to Entelodontidae by Aymard (1848), Scott (1940), Dashzeveg (1965), Carroll (1988), Foss (2007), Vislobokova (2008).

Synonyms

Entelodon diconodon was named by Trofimov (1952).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Lucas and Emry (1996).
Anthracothema tsuchiyai was named by Takai (1961). Its type specimen is UMUT CV-6189, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Iwasaki Colliery, Joban Coal Field, which is in a Priabonian fluvial sandstone/coal in the Iwaki Formation of Japan.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Tsubamoto et al. (2015).
Entelodon ingens was named by Leidy (1856). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Elotherium ingens by Leidy (1869), Scott (1895), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Archaeotherium ingens by Peterson (1909); it was considered a nomen dubium by Troxell (1920), Sinclair (1922), Scott (1940).
