Myriacanthus was named by Agassiz (1836) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett J Bajo Sepkoski's reference number: 2,452].

It was assigned to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002); and to Myriacanthidae by Woodward (1891), Jordan (1963), Duffin (1994), Nelson (2006).
