Taxonomy
Machaeracanthus was named by Newberry (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi-l D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 455,645]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Machaeracanthidae.

It was assigned to Ichthyodorulites by Hay (1902); to Acanthoessidae by Jordan (1963); to Acanthodii by Denison (1979); to Acanthodii by Sepkoski (2002); and to Machaeracanthidae by van der Laan (2019), Burrow and Elliott (2023).
