Glyptolepis was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 502].

It was assigned to Coelacanthi by Owen (1859); to Glyptodipterini by Huxley (1861); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Holoptychiidae by Mondéjar‐Fernández et al. (2020).
