Cryptomeryx matsoui was named by Sudre (1984). Its type specimen is USTL MGB 1182, a maxilla, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mas de Got (unknown horizon), which is in a MP 22 terrestrial phosphorite in France.
