Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. C. Tyler 2000Unique among all acanthurids, both fossil and Recent, by two derived features: extensive hypurostegy, with the caudal-fin rays so broadly overlapping the hypural plate that their bases are separated by only a narrow horizontal space along the midline of the plate (versus hypurostegy absent or only very moderately developed); the first, second, and third interneural spaces vacant (versus only the second and third, or only the third, or none vacant).
