Malthodes serafini was named by Kuska and Kupryjanowicz (2005). Its type specimen is MP/1/1513/188/01, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber, ISEA Krakow collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in Poland.
It was recombined as Malthodes (Malthodes) serafini by Fanti (2017) and Fanti (2017).
