Saurocephalus was named by Harlan (1824) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is the type genus of Saurocephalidae.
It was assigned to Ichthyosauroidea by Fitzinger (1826); to Chirocentridae by Woodward (1901); to Saurocephalinae by Hay (1902); to Saurocephalidae by Thurmond and Jones (1981); to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Saurodontidae by Applegate (1970), Cavin et al. (2013), Ebersole et al. (2022).
