Egertonia was named by Cocchi (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Eo-m Sepkoski's reference number: 746,915]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Labridae by Miller (1967); to Anguilliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phyllodontidae by Casier (1946), Casier (1958), Casier (1966), Cvancara and Hoganson (1993), Weems (1998), Weems (1999), Otero et al. (2015), Maisch et al. (2016) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
