Taxonomy
Stratodus was named by Cope (1872) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Stratodontidae.

It was assigned to Stratodontidae by Hay (1902); to Dercetidae by Tabaste (1963), Applegate (1970), Thurmond and Jones (1981); and to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
