Holcoptera alisonae was named by Kelly et al. (2017). Its type specimen is NHMUK In.59115, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Flatstones, Stonebarrow, Charmouth (Jackson collection), which is in an Obtusum marine mudstone in the United Kingdom.
