Taxonomy
Protictis schaffi was named by Gingerich and Winkler (1985). Its type locality is Schaff Quarry, which is in a Tiffanian terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Wyoming.
It was synonymized subjectively with Viverravus politus by Polly (1997); it was recombined as Viverravus schaffi by Secord (2008).
