Acercaria was named by Börner (1904). It is extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Neoptera by Misof et al. (2014); it was reranked as the unranked clade Acercaria by Prokop et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Neoptera by Prokop et al. (2015); and to Clareocercaria by Prokop et al. (2017).
