Pinichthys was named by Bannikov (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l T Mi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Pinichthys fractus.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stromateidae by Bannikov (1985), Bannikov (2018).
