Taxonomy
Aspideretes superstes was named by Russell (1930). Its type specimen is UA 334, a partial skeleton (carapace), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Highwood River, which is in a Paleocene terrestrial horizon in the Paskapoo Formation of Canada.

It was recombined as Atoposemys superstes by Vitek and Joyce (2015); it was recombined as Aspideretoides superstes by Joyce et al. (2016).

Synonyms
  • Atoposemys entopteros was named by Hutchison (2013). Its type specimen is UCMP 133900, a partial skeleton (incomplete postcranial skeleton consisting of complete carapace, nearly complete plastron except epiplastra, right and left scapula, right coracoid, partial pel), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP V86094 Headless Gulch, which is in a Puercan terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Montana.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Atoposemys superstes by Vitek and Joyce (2015).
