Wewokella was named by Girty (1912) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 222]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Wewokellidae.
It was assigned to Heteractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Wewokellidae by Rigby and Keyes (1998), Finks et al. (2004).
