It was assigned to Chelospharginae by Zangerl (1953), Weems (1988), Hooks (1998); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); to Dermochelyoidae by Bardet et al. (2013); and to Protostegidae by Thurmond and Jones (1981), Carroll (1988), Hirayama (1995), de Lapparent de Broin et al. (2014).
