Taxonomy

Telmatornis was named by Marsh (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Telmatornis priscus. It is the type genus of Telmatornithidae.

It was assigned to Rallidae by Zittel (1890), Hay (1902), Lambrecht (1933); to Rallinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Brodkorb (1967); to Telmatornithidae by Cracraft (1972); to Graculavidae by Olson and Parris (1987), Carroll (1988); to Presbyornithidae by Carroll (1988); and to Charadriiformes by Olson (1977), Hope (2002), Sepkoski (2002).
