Taxonomy
Anas sponsa was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Aix.

It was recombined as Aix sponsa by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Emslie (1998), Kilmer and Steadman (2016), Clements et al. (2017).
