Anas cyanoptera was named by Viellot (1816). It is extant.

It was recombined as Querquedula cyanoptera by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942); it was recombined as Spatula cyanoptera by Clements et al. (2017).
