Alcedo torquata was named by Linnaeus (1766) [now placed in Megaceryle Kaup, 1848 (ITIS)]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Ceryle torquata by Emslie (1998), Steadman et al. (2003); it was recombined as Megaceryle torquata by Clements et al. (2017).
