Falco cheriway was named by Jacquin (1784). It is extant.

It was recombined as Polyborus cheriway by Hay (1930) and Wetmore (1931); it was recombined as Caracara cheriway by Steadman and Mead (2010), Steadman et al. (2015) and Clements et al. (2017).
