Platalea ajaja was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Ajaja.
It was recombined as Ajaja ajaja by Hay (1930) and Woolfenden (1959); it was recombined as Ajaia ajaja by Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956) and Emslie (1995).
