Taxonomy
Atopotarus was named by Downs (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi Q Plei]. Its type is Atopotarus courseni.
It was synonymized subjectively with Allodesmus by Barnes (1969), Barnes (1972), Barnes (1989), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Deméré et al. (2003).
It was assigned to Otariidae by Downs (1956); to Carnivora by Sepkoski (2002); to Allodesminae by Mitchell (1968), Barnes and Hirota (1995), Kimura (1997) and Barnes (2008); to Desmatophocidae by Berta (2017); and to Allodesminae by Boessenecker and Churchill (2018).
